In Loving Memory...

This is a note that will be posted this afternoon on the side-yard fence at my parents' house in Columbia, South Carolina. My dad and brother's loving black lab, Duce, passed away on Monday. He was not a pet who will be easily forgotten.

On Labor Day, the 6th of September, we lost our beloved family pet, Duce. Over the many years, he met many friends in the neighborhood. He cheerfully greeted them at the fence by the road, wagging his tail for a treat and a head rub. He always watched them walk away as if to wave and say, “hurry back next time” or “come back soon”.

At thirteen, Duce’s health had been in decline for most of this year. Surprising all of us, he gracefully made it through the hot Columbia summer. He had his good days and his slow days. He never complained or showed his pain, though we knew he was suffering. He was the perfect family dog, kind and gentle, obedient, loving, loyal, and playful. He’d chase a ball all afternoon if you could throw it that long. He loved us well, and he is deeply missed by all of us.

Duce’s family would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your kindness and friendship to him over the years.
